Cooling towers under construction. Hams Hall B and C stations were later built nearby. During World War II the steam from their cooling towers was used as a reference point on overcast days by leading Spitfire and Lancaster test pilot Alex Henshaw who would fly from an airstrip at the Castle Bromwich aircraft factory [Alex Henshaw autobiography - Sigh for a Merlin]. All three stations closed in the 1990s and were demolished. The site is now used as a distribution park, which in 2011 included a BMW engine plant, DHL, E.ON, Sainsbury's, Chubb, Bekp and Wincanton. It has a rail terminal with freight deliveries to/from the continent. More detail on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hams_Hall |
