A signal set back from the track and some way up the embankment to improve sighting through the skew road over rail bridge, out of this picture to the left, that can be seen in image EPW023260. Unlike modern road bridges, which provide enough width for drivers to see the road ahead around a bend, railway bridges often had a restricted view ahead, so signals would be positioned to allow them to come into view as soon as possible. St Pauls. The spire suffered damage in the great storm in 1987. A lightning strike started a fire in the bell tower in 2004, causing further damage. On both occasions the eight bells were sent to the Whitechapel Foundry for repair; the second time to be re-cast. The spire is 170ft high. The parish was created in 1863 and the church was consecrated by the Bishop of Oxford in 1864
