National Shipyard No. 1
Established in the First World War, presumably to make up for shipping sunk by U-Boats. The War Forest was launched here in September 1918. A number of 'N-type' ships were constructed here on these slips. The War Apple was launched in May 1919, The War Fig and the War Genius in 1920. A syndicate known as the Monmouth Shipbuilding Co. took over from the government after the war. Fairfield Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. established here in 1925. They built three tank landing craft a month towards the end of the Second World War. [Source: Ivor Waters, The Port of Chepstow, The Chepstow Society, 1977]. |
