47 Broad Street. Part of Mavor and Coulson's engineering works.
This was the first part of Mavor and Coulson's works to be purpose-built. It was designed by Andrew Myles, and subsequently extended to the rear. This was probably the first purpose-built electrical engineering works in Glasgow. This view shows the street frontage of the building, which had internally a large full-height erecting bay flanked by galleries for lighter work. The central arched opening was originally a doorway. To either side are later additions for the same firm. Mavor and Coulson Ltd specialised in their early history in small and medium-sized generating installations, but went on to become leading manufacturers of electric mining equipment, especially belt conveyors.
