Picture of Holborough Cement Plant just before its acquisition by the Red Triangle Group. The plant operated 1924-1984. The third kiln had been installed the previous year. The kilns here were of a design common in the 1920s, 200 ft long and just under 9 ft in internal diameter for most of their length. They were all supplied by Vickers, Barrow in Furness. They were supported on four sets of rollers, and were driven near the third. They were fed (left-hand end) with chalk/marl/clay slurry containing about 40% water. At the hot (right-hand) end clinker is formed at around 1400 C, and falls into the cooler just visible below the kiln. Output at this time was around 170,000 tonnes per year of clinker or 180,000 tonnes per year of cement.
