In 1960 the famous Salford born painter L.S.Lowry was commissioned by local reporter Bob Smithies to paint the
twenty-four steps in Middleton. He apparently visited the steps twice to do the initial sketching and painting and then
added his famous matchstick figures later - including the five-legged dog in the foreground. |
