The listed name of this private dwelling is Courthorpes Whiligh, Ticehurst. Also known as Whiligh, Wallcrouch under General Post Code TN5 7JX Grade 2* listed building - English Heritage Building ID: 414936 The original portion of the building was erected by John Courthope in 1586 but was altered about 1840. Additions were also made in the early C19. The building is now L-shaped, the old portion facing south. The East front dates from the early C19. This house has been the home of the Courthope family since 1512. George Courthope was created a Baronet, of Whiligh in the County of Sussex, in 1925, and in 1945 he was raised to the peerage as Baron Courthope, of Whiligh in the County of Sussex - he had no male issue so when he died these titles became extinct. In 1980 when the Honourable Daphne Courthope died it passed to Mr. John Hardcastle her second cousin. The timbers for the roof of Westminster Hall were cut from this estate, as also were those for its repair after World War II. The house was reduced in size after the second world war as most of the servants' quarters were demolished. In the mid 1980's the house was divided and made into two residences, the work being executed by H F Bishop and Son.
