Hidden under here is the entrance to the Kingsway Subway. The line from Theobolds Road to Aldwych Station was opened on 24th February 1906, and the extention from there to the Embankment was completed and opened on 10th April 1908. Originally built in shallow tunnels allowing only the use of single decker cars a decision was taken in 1929 to increase the headroom to 16 feet 6 inches thus allowing the standard double deck cars to pass through. The single deck cars last carried passengers on 2nd February 1930 after which the subway was closed for reconstruction. The subway was formally re-opened on Wednesday 14th January 1931. Trams then used the subway until the "Last Day" on 5th July 1952. On 21st January 1964 the portion beneath Aldwych and Kingsway was opened to motor traffic.
