Letchmore Road was the site of one of the earlier schools in Stevenage and which was founded in 1910. The writer attended this school when it was a boys' junior school in 1950, prior to the transfer to Fairlands Primary School in January 1951. The Letchmore Road School became an Infants' section following this re-organisation and it continues to thrive to this day. The accompanying image was taken during a nostalgic visit in April 2015.

Lawrence Avenue saw the development of early council housing after the acts of 1925 and 1929, which resulted in the eastward expansion of the town during the late 1920s and 1930s. The writer can recall these homes in the immediate post-war era and a return visit in April 2015 indicates how much the housing stock has improved following the "Right to Buy" schemes in later decades. Also apparent are the numerous motor vehicles parked alongside these properties, contrasting with the austere scene associated with the 1940s!

Haycroft Road, which was extended in an easterly direction from the 1880s junction with Letchmore Road. Following a couple of housing acts in the 1920s, council houses were built further along Haycroft Road and on Longcroft Road and Lawrence Avenue.

Four police houses were constructed on the south side of Haycroft Road in late 1946, almost opposite the junction with Longcroft Road, which formed a further extension of housing along the former Haycroft Lane, beyond the interwar council properties. These houses have since passed into private ownership and the writer was invited to visit No.126, his former home for six years until February 1953, by the current occupants, in early April 2015. Needless to say, although the exterior of the house was familiar, there had been extensive renovations to the inside of the property during the intervening six decades!

Fairlands Primary School, nearing completion in readiness for the official opening in January 1951 and still flourishing when this writer returned to Stevenage for a short visit in April 2015.

Chequers Field, home to Stevenage Town Cricket Club since 1901, courtesy of Lord Lytton, and also a popular venue for Hertfordshire Minor County matches. Between the wars, Stevenage hosted more minor county games than any other ground except Watford's West Herts pitch at Cassio Road.

Whomerley Wood and Monks Wood, which now form part of the Fairlands Valley Park, between Bedwell and Shephall. In the late 1940s, this contributor used to walk, with family and friends, along the footpaths for picnics in Monks Wood, via Fairlands and Bedwell Plash, before the New Town was built.
