The second Elstree Tunnel was opened in 1895 as part of the Midland Railway's widening of the line from two to four tracks. Regrettably my comment below is inaccurate - the goods lines became the 'Slow Lines' in 1895, not 1906. (This correction is the result of further research into the history of the preserved St Albans South signal box.)

Train is entering the original Elstree Tunnel, built as part of the Midland Railway's 1868 "London Extension".

The tunnel the train is entering is the original 1860s tunnel dating from when the Midland Railway opened its 'London Extension'. The second tunnel, on the left of the photo, was opened in 1894 when the two goods lines were extended southwards from St Albans. In 1906 these were converted into the 'Slow' lines for passenger use as well as goods trains.
