' The second Elstree Tunnel was opened in 1895 as part of the Midland Railway's widening of the line from two to four tracks. Regrettably my comment below is inaccurate - the goods lines became the 'Slow Lines' in 1895, not 1906. (This correction is the result of further research into the history of the preserved St Albans South signal box.) '
