This style of post painting was introduced in the 1930s by A F Bound, the LMS senior Signal and Telegraph Engineer. He considered these 'Isolated Distants' to be important landmarks for drivers. Bound's successor thought the practice to be too expensive and discontinued it; but some posts continued to be painted in striped fashion well into BR days, including those mounted with replacement colour light distant signals! |
