Souter Lighthouse was the first in the world to be designed to run an electrically powered light. The light was an arc light of 800,000 candlepower which was visible up to 26 miles away. The lighthouse was designed by James Nicholas Douglass, the Engineer-in-Chief of Trinity House, who was knighted after building the fourth Eddystone Lighthouse in 1882. This picture is truly a landscape of change. The pit has gone. The tip has been levelled and the quarry like depression between the pit and the sea has been filled in. The house in the foreground have gone. the railway has gone. The light house remains and new housing has arrived. Perhaps one for the book! |
