The Castle Hotel. Opened in 1887 by Brear & Brown's brewery of Hipperholme. Became a Whitaker's house in 1916. Because it was the nearest pub to the cattle market it was allowed to open at 10.00 a.m. On market day (Friday).
The Castle later became The Armada and The Bucaneer and closed in 2009. '
