The first church in West Bank was opened in 1858; known as Widnes Dock Church and dedicated to St Mary, the building was never fully completed and consisted only of the nave. It had also been built on a chemical waste site and as a result suffered from severe subsidence, leading to its closure in the early 1900s. and demolished.
