' St Nicholas Church - the old parish church for Stevenage. Once a year on what was called Founder's Day all the boys and staff from Alleynes Grammar School would walk up The Avenue to the church for a special service to commemorate the school's founder Rev Thomas Alleyne. The school was founded in 1558 - a date that featured in the first line of the old 'School Song'. From what I remember, all the boys were encouraged to wear a red rose in their school blazer lapel on that day - the emblem of the school was a red rose. '
