' The former Cunard flagship, 'Berengaria', had been taken out of service on 3 March 1938 on arrival in New York following the latest in a series of fires in her electrical wiring. The aging 'Berengaria' started life as the Hamburg-America Line’s Imperator until it was handed over to Cunard in late 1919 as war reparation. Having been denied the right to load her east bound passengers the 'Berengaria' sailed empty for Southampton and was withdrawn from the Cunard fleet on 23 March 1938. The 'Queen Mary' was introduced onto the North Atlantic in 1936, replacing the 'Berengaria' as Cunard's new flagship. '
