The shadow to the left of the track is the shielded side contact third rail, which has wooden planking over the top and on the far side. There is a break in the electrified rail just below near the signal box to allow safe crossing of the line on foot - the trains had multiple pickups and could cope with such a small break.
As pick ups were on each side of the carriages, the electric third rail could also be on either side of the track. In stations they were both on the middle of the two tracks. track. |

Railway line, Manchester Victoria (to the bottom) to Bury (to the top left).
This was an unusual early electrified line with side contact third rail. Now operated by Manchester Metrolink as a tram line with overhead wires.
The sidings have gone. |

The side contact was so a cover could be put over this rail with only a narrow slot for the collector shoe to enter into it. The line voltage was 1200 volts D.C. Twice that of any other third rail system. |
