Smiths Lawn Records exist of a grass airfield being prepared in the 1920s for the use of the Prince of Wales - later to become Edward VIII, and in World War II, Smith's Lawn continued to be used as an aerodrome. Uppermost was the security of the monarch, King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth, and their children, the two princesses. The airfield would have permitted a quick escape route in the event of a German invasion.

Another biplane, smaller and/or further away, possibly on the ground.

I believe this is the AW Argosy G-EBLF. See also EPW035053 and EPW035065.

View is looking north.

The 1:10560 Ordnace Survey map for 1914 has a flying barn marked just out of shot to the east.

Hi Class31,

So what gave it away for you?! This is a remarkable find, very well done. The original Aerofilms Ltd Register entry is blank, as are the entries before and after this glass plate (so no clues there for us).

We'll update the catalogue entry, and post your correct location data here in due course.

Yours, Katy
