Smiths Lawn Records exist of a grass airfield being prepared in the 1920s for the use of the Prince of Wales - later to become Edward VIII, and in World War II, Smith's Lawn continued to be used as an aerodrome. Uppermost was the security of the monarch, King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth, and their children, the two princesses. The airfield would have permitted a quick escape route in the event of a German invasion.
