In the early 1960's we used to make journeys by car from South Wales to the West Country. Before the construction of the Severn Bridge the route involved travelling through the centre of Gloucester and funnily I remember the acute angled turn from Commercial Street into Southgate Street.

City Flour Mills were taken over by Priday, Metford and Pearce in 1886. At the end of 1887 or very early in 1888 there was a fire here which gutted the five-storey brick-built granary, which also housed a steam engine and boiler. Local fire brigade managed to save the roller flour mills in an adjoining building. The granary, covered by insurance, was later rebuilt.
