'Tinker' Novis was the last boatman to rent out rowing boats. He carried on after WW2 but when he quit (1960s?) there were no rowing boats left to rent out. Brian Allchorn told me that they stopped renting out rowing boats because people would row them up towards Beachy Head and then get fed up. They would just abandon the boats on the beach below the cliffs and walk away!
