 This pond was about 100ft deep and had been there from the days when the Monks mined coal from a seam called 'The Monkton Seam'. It was what was called a Bell Pit.
A lot of rubble from the demolition of old Jarrow was dumped into it. |

| This was what we called the Island Lake. The 4 lakes were created in the 1860s -70s as private ponds for the Ellison family. The water that filled them came from the little burn that ran from Wardley area . Photos on my website www.oldtyneside.co.uk |

| This was the pit shaft that the men in 'sinkers row' (Elmfield Tce) sunk. Today it will be capped off and a new housing estate has been built there. |

| This row of houses is Elmfield Tce but it was nicknamed 'Sinkers Row' in those days because they were built to house the men who sunk a local coalmine shaft. The row of houses are still there today in 2015. Photos of it are on my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website |

| The Pontop Line that the Bowes coal trucks used to take coal to the Staiths at Jarrow. When we were kids in the 50s we often hitched a free ride on the slow moving trucks & then we'd get off at Jarrow Park. I knew one lad who lost a leg & another who lost an arm doing this. |

| This was a valley with a stream running from the lakes to the river Don in Jarrow. We called it 'The Dip' in the 50s & 60s. Because the slagheap was there it went underground via a culvert & it emerged in Pig Sty Avenue in Jarrow & then onto the Don. |

| The Pump House on the east side of what we called 'The First Lake'. The lake was one of 4 man made lakes that the Ellison family had made as part of their garden. Ellison's were rich Land owners & reside at the large Hebburn Hall. In the 1890s they gave the house to be used as an Infirmary. |
