Tramway with a slot or conduit in the centre for current collection. Certain London boroughs would not allow overhead wiring to be erected and so this method was used. Trams dropped or picked up the "plough", as it was known, from the apparatus underneath them on borough boundaries. Junctions could not be wired and so trams free wheeled through them, this was to cause their downfall when increases in traffic in the latter years caused them to get stuck. |
