USA class 0-6-0 steam shunter. These locos, originally built either by the Vulcan Iron Works of Pennsylvania or H. K. Porter of Pittsburgh, were surplus from the Second World War. Southern Railways, the owner of Southampton Docks, purchased 14 in 1947 after having tested one in the docks to ensure it was suitable for the very tight curves there and the heavy loads that had to be moved.
