 International Cotton Waste after fire had destroyed half of it and damaged the upper floor and took the roof off.
At the time of the fire the residents of Wood Street and Railway View were evacuated.
Victoria Road was closed and the fire brigade drew water form the Newton Wood arm of the Peak Forest Canal.

This was a brilliant club with football/cricket field, bowling green and tennis courts. It was also a social club open weekends. I had my 21st birthday party there in 1974 while it was still a very popular club. |
