British Ropes Ltd - Wire works - Doncaster The Company was incorporated on 6 June 1924, formed through a merger of eight companies. Seven of these made wire rope only, whilst one (Craven and Speeding) made fibre products, particularly binder twine. An additional 18 companies were acquired in the next couple of years, including '''Doncaster Wire Co'''. Further acqusitions were made at a slower rate as the years progressed. Steep ropes were widely used in industry especially in shipping including nets and launching ropes. In the mid 1940s rationalisation took the number of wire rope factories down to seven, including two in Doncaster, the North Ropery of 1935 and the South Ropery of 1938 Gateshead, formerly Haggie Bros. Yet more acquisitions followed. 1974- Change of Company name to Bridon Ltd. Currently at Balby Carr Bank Doncaster DN4 5JQ 2014- In October 2014 Melrose Industries PLC (“Melrose”) announces that it has signed an agreement for the disposal of Bridon to the Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan (“OTPP”). Peglers of Belmont Works, Doncaster, 1899 Frank Pegler and Fred Birchall founded the company Manufacturers of screw down taps Land was bought at '''Balby''' and, in 1904, the Belmont works were built. In WW1 the plant produced Sopwith planes. '''1935 The company's 200 foot chimney was erected.''' seen in image. WW2 manufacture included 6,000 Pegler taps used on the Ark Royal In 2014 Pegler Yorkshire is part of the Flow Control division of Aalberts Industries N.V.
