I returned to Firth Browns in 1964 to 1966 as the chargehand in this shop. Also gained a 10 ton overhead crane licence so I could be the standby driver.

I trained and obtained a 10 ton overhead crane driver licence in the Siemens electric melting shop in 1965. This was to enable me operate the crane in my dept. (Central Warehouse)should the full time driver not be available. The biggest and highest crane in the Siemens shop was rated at 100 tons and carried a massive ladle with molten steel from the furnace. I was fortunate in that I was able to have a short time in the cab with the driver and my instructor.

These buildings to the left of the pin still exist and are named 'President Buildings'. I believe they are subject to a preservation order.
