Ashlea (now a pub, with part a local authority office)

Site of the old Cheadle South railway station opened by the London & North Western Railway Company in 1866 and closed to passengers on January 1st 1917. Trains had operated from Manchester via Stockport Edgeley, with some extending to Broadheath and Warrington (Bank Quay Low Level). The adjacent goods sidings and depot remained open, however, until the late 20th century. providing facilities for local coal merchants.

London & North Western Railway Company goods line, towards Warrington to the left and west, towards Stockport (Edgeley) and Buxton to the right and east. No passenger services used the line at this date.

St Mary's CE Parish Church - substantially repaired/rebuilt in the mid 16th century, but there has probably been a church on the site since at least 1200 - perhaps orginally dedicated to St Chad, first bishop of the Mercians at Lichfield.

High Street (now A560)

Abney Hall and park - early Victorian country home of the Watts family, business magnates and civic worthies in Manchester, where the novelist Agatha Christie who was a relative by marriage of the Watts family used to stay. The house became the council offices for Cheadle & Gatley UDC in 1958, and after the area was absorbed into Stockport in 1974 was used mainly as offices.

Manchester Road (now B5095)

Drive to the Manchester Royal Infirmary's Barnes Convalescent Hospital, now redundant and - after various redevelopment plans failed to materialize - in pretty poor condition last time I passed that way.

Station approach.

Cheadle North railway station (Cheshire Lines Committee) on the Liverpool (Central-Warrington (Central)-Stockport (Tiviot Dale) railway line - passenger services continued until November 39th 1964. The station buildings still remain, as a pub with a railway theme.
