Built on the former course of the Glasgow, Paisley and Johnstone Canal, Canal Station opened on 1 July 1885 by the Glasgow and South Western Railway Co., it closed to passengers on 10 Jan 1983. Due to demand a new 'Halt' type Platform was built on the opposite side of the Road (Causeyside St) and the new Canal Station reopened to traffic on 28 July 1990.
