Leeds and Liverpool Canal: Connects Leeds to Liverpool over a distance of 127 miles (204 km), it crosses the Pennines, and includes 91 locks on the main line. A commencement ceremony was held at Halsall, north of Liverpool on 5 November 1770. The canal took almost 40 years to complete- the main line of the canal was thus completed in 1816. A connection to Manchester took place in 1820- however the Bridgewater Canal having been built for boats of 72 feet whilst the Leeds and Liverpool was for boats of 62feet, the locks to Liverpool were extended in 1822 to allow the longer boats from Manchester to pass through.
