A standard gauge wagon on a narrow gauge trolley. The practice of loading standard gauge wagons onto narrow gauge vehicles was common in Europe but less so here, this being one of the only examples.

In fact, THE only example. The Ashover Railway near Clay Cross bought some of the transporter wagons, but they weren't practical on the narrower gauge (2ft as against 2ft 6in) and the less well designed track of the other Peak District narrow gauge railway, and lingered out of use until they were sold for scrap.

Both sidings have lengths of standard gauge track set at a higher level, so the wagons (coal wagons) could be rolled off the trolleys onto their own track.

I love this photo of the terminus of the narrow gauge Leek & Manifold Light Railway which closed down shortly after this photo was taken.

To view the loading of a standard gauge wagon onto a narrow gauge wagon see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWZbZGGnE6E

Most of of the Leek and Manifolds goods traffic was handled in this way to save transhipment at the break of gauge.... the film shows milk in churns in narrow gauge wagons.

How wonderful to see this. Have only known the site from boyhood walks and one of the sheds is still standing. Seem to remeber a good pub nearby. Lovely part of the world.
