MOAT HOUSE....BUILT AND DESIGNED IN 1680 BY WILLIAM WILSON, BUILDER, ARCHITECT, AND STUDENT OF SIR CHRISTOPHER WREN, FOR HIS NEW WIFE, JANE PUDSEY, A WEALTHY WIDOW WHO HAD PREVIOUSLY OWNED NEARBY LANGLEY HALL, WITH HER FIRST HUSBAND.
THE MOAT SURVIVED UNTIL 1860 AND HAD TO BE CROSSED BY A SMALL STONE BRIDGE. NO TRACE OF THE MOAT REMAINS. |

'THE THREE TUNS HOTEL' IS THE OLDEST PUB IN SUTTON COLDFIELD, DATING FROM THE EARLY 16TH CENTURY. REPUTED TO HAVE HAD SHAKESPEARE AND CROMWELL STAY THERE. IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE WHERE SHAKESPEARE'S CHARACTER 'FALSTAFF' DRANK AND SUTTON COLDFIELD IS MENTIONED IN ONE OF HIS PLAYS... IT IS ALSO REPUTEDLY HAUNTED BY THE ' ROYALIST DRUMMER BOY' WHO WAS KILLED IN THE CIVIL WAR,,,HELD IN THE STOCKS AND THEN IMPRISONED IN THE CELLARS.
THE OLD STAGE COACH ENTRANCE OFF THE HIGH STREET IS STILL THE ENTRANCE BUT HAS NOW BEEN GLAZED OVER INSIDE. |
