Now the site of the Hovercraft Museum, and prior to that RNAS Daedalus and Inter Service Hovercraft Unit?

The 5 sheds nearest the camera still remain, although the 2 long ones much shorter now. Obviously no sign of Daedalus runways in the above picture.

This seplane base was created in 1917 as a substation of seaplane training unit at Calshot which could no be expanded. The Naval Seaplane Training Unit opened on 1 July 1917. on 1 April 1918 Lee-on-Solent was transferred to the newly formed RAF as No 209 Training Depot station. All traing ceased on 1 January 1919.

the station reopened when the RAF & Naval Co-operation School was formed, and closed again in December 1919 only to reopen on 1 June 1920. HQ 10 Group moved in from Warsash and the following month the unit became the School of Naval Co-operation & air Navigation. In April 1921 the school became the RAF seaplane Training School until May 1923 when it became the School of Naval Co-operation, which was the title in 1928.

[From 1918 until 1939 naval aviation in the UK was part of the RAF as the Fleet Air Arm (FAA)]
