New Road runs in front of Harris's bacon factory. Nearer the camera is the terminus of the Calne branch of the Wilts & Berks Canal, still in water in 1920. At one time coal would have been shipped here from places such as Paulton and Timsbury on the Somersetshire Coal Canal. The two narrow-boat canals were linked by a third, major canal - the Kennet & Avon |
