The 'Furnace Building' - columns, floors and walls were subjected to fire tests in gas-fired furnaces - hence the name. The need for gas in part led to the choosing of this site in 1935 - close to the gas works and the railway for the delivery of test specimens.

Elstree Tunnel entrances: the right-hand tunnel is the original 1860s tunnel, the one on the left was opened in 1895.

The 'Black Huts' - Nissan sheds. Erected during WW2 and taken over sometime afterwards by the Fire Research Station - use discontinued in the 1960s when better facilities had been built up the road.

Buildings of the Fire Research Station, operated by the Joint Fire Research Organization, a co-operative working by the fire insurers and Central government 1946-1976. The buildings visible in this picture were mostly erected in 1935; the site was considerably extended in the 1950s, 60s and 70s.
