I think it much more likely to be the railway line's own 'pole route' to save the expense of terminating the overhead line at each end of the tunnel and using a multicore-cable through the tunnel. |

This view is before the East Coast main line was widened to four tracks in the mid-1950s, resulting in a second tunnel being constructed parallel to this original tunnel. |
