Good example of geomorphological processes, with the beach growing where it is protected by the stranded trawler. The trawler in effect has made a stack or small island which reduces the amount of wave energy reaching the beach so material has accumulated, forming the beginnings of a 'tombolo' - a bar of sand linking an island to the mainland.
This principle has been used in some modern coastal protection schemes, notably the rock islands formed off-shore at Sidmouth in Devon, in an attempt to control attrition on the beach.

EMERGENCY COAST ARTILLERY BATTERY: S0001208 before many of the features fell to coastal erosion and development - looks almost intact in 1947 - the keel of the sheraton is still visible in contemporary satellite imagery |
