Can anyone remember `The Match` she was a coastal cargo boat that plied between the Isle 0f Wight and Southampton Waters and carried mainly grain to the Solent Mill?as a small boy in the 1950`s I made the trip a number of times, she carried about 80 tons and was skippered and crewed by the Mew family(related)of Newport I.O.W. I last saw her tied up against the wall of the mill about 1964/5 a cold ship awaiting the scrapyard. Can anyone remember Southampton Railway Station and it`s surrounding area in the post war days of the 1940`s nothing but neat piles of rubble from the bombed buildings, total devestation everywhere, everything was flattened,a small single decked bus collected passengers from the station for transit to the I.O.W ferry, after that, the trips in Winter on a shallow draft paddle steamer, thank God for stabilizers. |
