Overhead electric in 1938- this was the Manchester South Junction and Alrincham Railway. The line was opened in 1849 and operated by steam trains. It was electrified in 1931 using 1500 volts DC to compete better with the electric trams then running more or less alongside. The 4 track section was reduced to double line in 1963. By 1971 the line was 25,000 volts AC with trains running through from Altrincham through Manchester to Alderley Edge and Crewe. In 1992 the line was converted to yet another voltage (750 Volts DC) and was used for Manchester Metrolink trams running between Altrincham and Bury, with a short section of street running to cross Manchester city centre.
