In 1933 this was Cornish's department store and the building still stands as it is and was still trading as Cornish's until the late 1970's.

Is this the Devon County War Memorial, designed by Sir Edward Lutyens and completed in 1921?

The entrance to Higher market whose frontage and portico has been tastefully (in my opinion) merged into modern shops etc and for which Exeter City Council should be commended.

Located on the corner of High Street and Queen Street this Victorian (maybe even Georgian) building survived the war and until the 1970's was Webbers sports shop. Then in their wisdom Exeter City Council allowed the building to be demolished and replaced by a bland soul-less all brick C&A store.

Underwood Business Machines office. My father worked here from 1942 and had to do fire watching from the roof during the war. One of the requirements would have been to throw incendiary bombs off the roof into the street below.

Devon and Exeter Institution was founded in 1813 by some two hundred gentlemen of the county and city, ‘for promoting the general diffusion of Science, Literature and Art, and for illustrating the Natural and Civil History of the county of Devon and the city of Exeter’. The society is still going strong and now has some 40,000 books and many thousands of documents covering not just Exeter but the whole of Devon.
