The ship being dismantled is in fact HMS Illustrious. Thos W Ward Ltd used this image in their 1923 publication 'More Leaves from Our Catalogue' and identified the vessel in the image, it appears Wards used a great deal of Aerofilms material in their 1923 publication and consequently searches for Morecambe, Silvertown, Inverkeithing, Grays, Briton Ferry or just Thomas Ward will bring up a host of images, some of which were used in Ward Publications

Two grandfathers, my father and some uncles worked on Barrow docks. My paternal grandfather (during and after the first Worl War)had a group of men who worked for him. He was paid in advance by Vickers or the yard (not sure which)for jobs he said he would do but frequently, so I was told, he would fall way behind or even fail to do the jobs. What a strange system! Eventually to escape his debts he emigrated to the USA but hated prohibition so he returned.
