Clothing factory,1871, by R Todd of Southport,
for Timothy Coop and James Marsden; with large additions of
1888, by Isitt and Verity, and 1892 by W Verity. Yellow and
red brick on rusticated sandstone basement (roof concealed but
probably asphalt). Very large rectangular block on corner
site. Italianate style.
In use as sewing factory up to 1992. |

I used to live in Frog Lane and attended St.John's R.C. primary in Brick Kiln Lane, so my route to school took me across the market square. Imagine the excitement when the white markings outlining the attractions of Silcock's fair appeared on the cobbles. Also, in December when the Christmas tree appeared surrounded by rhododendron,(I think),hedges. Eddie |

'The indoor market; a brilliant place to go on a wet day.' Seriously,there is nothing to see in the indoor market, it's embarrassing. The building in this picture was, however a beautiful place, bustling till it's demolition. |

You'll need to zoom in to get the best view, but here are a few points of interest: Take a straight line from Parish Church (black building near centre, 1/4 way down) to top right corner. Half way along that line is Central Park, home to Wigan RLFC. Look at the railway - no fewer than 6 trains running at once. My old school, St Joseph's, is near bottom right, with terraced houses backing on to the playground. Spot the trams/trolleybuses running along Wallgate - not a motor car or lorry in sight. Wigan Hippodrome advertises itself near extreme right. Finally I'm guessing that the photo was taken on Sunday, or "Wigan Holiday week", as none of the chimneys are smoking! |
