| 1930's Green Hat pub was built, it was later demolished in the 1980's. The bridge that still stands on the main road that ran over the narrow gauge railway for the brickyard is known as Green Hat Bridge. The new mini supermarket (Co-op) now stands in its place, the field track that runs down the back of the Co-op leads to a SSSI sight called Bull Car Mires |

The Railway wasn't narrow gauge it was 36&1/2 inches, it took the spoil from the screens off the pit top to the far side of the tips in "V" bucket waggons pulled by a 6 wheel steam locomotive called "Jean". 6 men worked a 3 shift system tipping the waggons and a Caterpillar D9 bulldozer did the grading. Frank Garbutt from Hemsworth, Fred Kirby from Kirk Smeaton, Frank Pilsworth from the other side of pontefract road (through Walton wood), a lad called Cooper from Rose estate, 2 othe men who I cant remember, and Charlie Winks from Hemsworth was the Bulldozer driver. There was an accident one night when the railways banking gave way and the loco tipped over killing the fireman. |
