Tender to tender with another Gresley classic, the V2, which looks to be in LNER Apple Green livery judging by the light shade in the monochrome photo. I wonder if, being darker, the A4 was in experimental BR Blue, because it has the words BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tender, as does the V2. So this would put the photo about 1948-50. Ah, should've looked first. There it is, April 1950. |

Site of locomotive turntable (70 feet diameter). At this time the turntable was out of action because of ground subsidence - a serious situation which made it impossible to operate the depot effectively until alternative arrangements were put in place in 1951. For this reason there are fewer express locomotives at the shed than there would have been had the shed been fully operational. |
