Instow was a restricted area during the war, American troops were garrisoned here in many of Instows buildings
The far end of instow where the cricket club is, had the Instow emergency battery comprising of two 6" naval guns/magazines/searchlights & air defences which defended the approach to Barnstaple and the Torridge
