The date was 27th August 1953. Lord Buxton wished to prove that it was theoretically possible for the Romans to have forded the Humber, where the Ermine Street stopped on the southern bank at Winteringham, and restarted on the northern bank at Brough. He had also forded the Thames outside the Houses of Parliament beforehand. As well as the large crowds to see him off at Brough, there were also large crowds on the bank between Winteringham and Whitton, to see him ashore. I missed the last bit of the action as I dragged my mother to see the helicopter which landed just behind the river bank! After he waded ashore, he went to the Bay Horse in Winteringham for a bath! On the south bank, we understood that he had had a "lift" in a boat to get over the deep water channel on the Brough side .... but there appears to be no evidence for this in the photographs. We also thought the helicopter was trailing a rope, or a rope ladder, which doesn't seem to be on view either. A number of other people have walked across the Humber since. |
