| This was the rail link for Shorts and Coles which connected to the main Sunderland to Durham line at Pallion Station. It swept around the factory and down a steep gradient, and under the site access road onto yard level. |

| Subsequently extended westwards, this was Coles Cranes which in turn ended up as Groves - closed in 1998, and now nearly all demolished while the possible new river crossing is onn the drawing board. Only the offices and one or two of the factories remain (Feb 2014). |

Coles bought half of Short's yard in 1962, the other, eastern half, was sold to Doxford's ship builders. The old boundary wall down the bank is about all that remains. |
