The playing field of the now disappeared (c. 1899 to c.1964) Shirley House prep school (off the photo to the left). Its entrance was on Langley Road right next to the junction with Church Road. Subsequently the school site became the grounds of Cassio College, the old playing field being mostly coverd in tarmac as the college car park. That has also since been closed and demolished (early 2000s?) and it's a housing development - Colnhurst Road, Elliott Road, etc.. In the corner just set back into the wood is the school swimming pool and if you look closely you can see some people around it, although it looks to be empty, perhaps for cleaning (or construction... it may have just been completed then).
I was at Shirley House from 1956-62 and was chilled to the core many a time in that pool, during compulsory swimming sessions.
