The Ballast Hill at Hebburn. In years gone by the boats coming into the Tyne for coal dropped their ballast off & then loaded up with coal. The Ballast in those days was sand/gravel. Photo showing Hebburn man ontop of the hill is from my www.oldtyneside.co.uk website & in the background is Swan Hunter's Ship Building yard at Wallsend. '
